This meta-analysis examined the effect of pair-programming on learning and explored the design elements that promote pair-programming experiences. Through 167 effect sizes from 30 studies, the overall effect sizes were large in cognitive outcomes (g=0.52, 95% CI [0.35, 0.67]), but small in affective outcomes (g=0.12, 95% CI [0.08, 0.15]). Subgroup analysis revealed the assessment type and students’ major moderated effect sizes. We further discussed how to design better pair-programming experiences based on our results.
