Engineering students’ experience of surprise caused by test performance in foundational courses

Wed, Oct 26, 8:40 to 8:55am PDT (8:40 to 8:55am PDT), Conf Center, Celebrity 3

Short Description

Engineering students tend not to perform well in foundational courses. Given that college engineering students typically performed well during high school, they may be likely to experience surprise. This study investigated engineering students’ surprise expressed in the reflections written after exams. In one third of the reflections, students rated their surprise to be higher than 2 (out of 4). Reflection analysis shows the causes of their surprise, liking, and expectancy ratings of their test scores.
