A Systematic Review on Cognitive Presence in Online Courses (2008-2020)

This systematic review synthesizes 24 empirical peer-reviewed articles published between 2008-2020 that studied cognitive presence within online courses. We will present the emergent patterns we found between the presences of the Community of Inquiry (COI) model (Garrison et al., 1999). We were particularly interested in the development of instructional activities that foster cognitive presence, and we share our findings and discuss implications for practice.
