To promote preservice teachers’ responsive teaching skills, we developed an Artificial Intelligence-based chatbot that engaged them in an authentic, meaningful, open-ended teaching situation where they had personalized interactions with a virtual student.
The chatbot was designed to act like an elementary student who displayed misconceptions on fractions. In this design-based research, two iterations took place. Our research questions were about coverage of users’ input, their questioning patterns, users’ experiences, and design features of the chatbot.
