This paper reports on a case study of participatory design and development of open online courses on artificial intelligence in education. In three project courses, N=33 students were engaged in formative evaluation and developed ideas and artifacts. All in all, participatory design made a valuable contribution to the instructional design process. Evaluation results open up the possibility to discuss the benefits and limitations of participatory design approaches and to derive design recommendations for the field.
