This roundtable presents a historical analysis of educational robots as they apply to K-12 education in terms of Pre-2000s, 2000-2020, and current and future directions. Early stages of educational robotics (Pre-2000s) were rooted in theoretical and conceptual ideas. The transition in the early 2000s coincided with the increased emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and created opportunities for robotics to enter classrooms in formal settings, shifting the focus toward learning outcomes. This article concludes with future directions as it relates to curriculum development and learning design approaches.
