This case study explored a K-12 teacher’s scaffolding practices to support students’ design problems as they designed and built functional greenhouses in a project-based learning (PjBL) environment. Findings suggest PjBL provided authentic learning opportunities to support design problems. Despite obstacles such as group dynamics, time management, and availability of resources, the teacher’s scaffolding practices supported prototyping, reinforced iterative engineering design, engaged students in reflective discussion, and incorporated multiple subjects into a single project.
