Short Description

This study investigated the design of online case-based discussions to foster cognitive presence and learning. Data were collected from eighty graduate students through online survey and course grades. Findings revealed that students reported high levels of cognitive presence at “integration” and “resolution” phases. Additionally, “exploration” phase was significantly related to students’ perceived learning from case discussions and the course grades. Open-ended survey data revealed five design elements of case-based discussions including: nature of the discussion task, initial question prompts, embedded peer interaction, relevance of topic, and well-structured activities.
