This literature review summarizes the evidence regarding international students’ participation in online courses, covering articles from 2000 to 2022. Preliminary results show that international students appreciate the opportunity to express their thoughts clearly through online discussions. Challenges regarding cultural differences, lack of instructors’ presence, and lack of technical skills also exist. We argue for a better understanding of the international students’ diverse needs in online learning to guide thoughtful instructional design and online teaching.
