This qualitative case study investigates students’ cognitive engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency remote learning (ERL) as well as students’ perceptions on their technology use in a Chinese language class during ERL. The results show that technology had played an important role in students’ cognitive engagement by making students acquire new learning materials and convey their opinions or feedback to each other. However, it could also change students’ established learning strategies or habits.
