A Case Study: Examining a Student Design Challenge Using the ARCS Model of Motivation

This poster highlights an explanatory case study (Yin, 2018) designed to describe student engagement and motivation in the NASA Spacesuit User Interface Technologies for Students (SUITS) in terms of the ARCS Model of Motivation (Keller, 1987). The purpose of the study is to explain the relationship between the design of SUITS as an authentic learning ecosystem that motivates students to continue pursuing STEM degrees fields and the students’ attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS).

Double-O STEM: Community-Based STEM Projects for Informal Learning

The design showcase details how our team designed an informal, inquiry-based STEM curriculum to address inequity issues within underserved areas of Memphis, TN. The design showcase highlights tensions to address this issue around the areas of (a) designing content uniquely suited for librarian’s skillset (inquiry; information seeking) (b) designing cases around contextualized needs of underserved communities (c) designing open-access curriculum that is representative of the community, but could be adopted by other library contexts

Innovative Uses of Social Educational Robotics to Broaden Student Participation in STEAM

Educational robotics is a popular tool for introducing programming to novices. Although research on educational robotics is growing, most of studies used a version of LEGO robotics, which limits our understanding of how other types of robots can be used in education. This presentation will share several prototypes of custom-built social robots that were developed in Advanced Telerobotics Research Lab and how these robots can be integrated into Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

The Museum of Instructional Design: A Prototype 3D Virtual Learning Environment

The Museum of Instructional Design is a three-dimensional online learning environment designed and developed to support the learning needs of students enrolled in an Instructional Design & Technology class. During the semester, students assume the role of museum curators and spend class time engaging in applied design and development activities. In this session, we showcase the design and development process of the system and demonstrate sample activities that were situated within the learning environment.

Impacting Human Rights Education through Interdisciplinary Collaboration and First Principles of Instruction Methodology

This design showcase will focus on the development of an online learning platform for interfaith actors and human rights activists around the world. Evidence-based instructional design methodology was used to impact student learning in diverse international environments. Utilizing interdisciplinary concentric collaboration can help instructional designers to become agents of change as they collaborate to create effective learning platforms. This showcase has implications for instructional designers who wish to more effectively collaborate across disciplines.
