This study examines gamification and student engagement at an R1 university. Gamification has been shown to enhance learning outcomes, but challenges remain in sustaining student engagement in online courses. In particular, tracking engagement patterns is critical to gather evidence of adaptive design that supports students’ sustainable engagement states. Using Educational Data Mining, we explore ways to identify engagement behaviors and patterns. Findings provide insights into the benefits of integrating gamification techniques into an online environment.
