What do instructional designers do to achieve high levels of course quality? Based on ethnographic study of online course design at a university in the United States, I report on three types of practices designers employ: innovation practices; instructional design processes; and the everyday tasks of refining the courses in their portfolios. I also describe which of these made the biggest difference in designers’ pursuit of quality. Hint: it’s probably not what you think.
