The Distance Education Self-efficacy and Self-regulation Identifier (DESSI) pilot study aimed to create a new instrument useful in distance education settings capable of informing instructors’ evidence-based instructional design choices and advance the educational research field. Using a mixed methods design, the DESSI survey was a lesson in how to refine and enhance an instrument to measure students’ outcomes in a meaningful way to support instruction.
