This meta-analysis study synthesized empirical research on chatbots to indicate their effect on learning. The analysis of 31 individual effect sizes yielded a moderate overall effect (g=.48). Further analysis revealed four significant moderators: type of instruction in the control group, experimental duration, chatbot type, and chatbot tasks. Higher effect sizes were obtained in the studies with one experimental session and task-based chatbots answering FAQs. These findings provide important design insights for researchers and educators.
