Teaching, Social Presence, and Transactional Distance: Learning Professionals’ Perceptions and Use of Webcams

Mon, Oct 16, 10:00 to 10:50am EDT (10:00 to 10:50am EDT), Doubletree Main Conference Center - Seminole, Sun & Surf IV

Short Description

Love them or hate them, webcams have become a staple of the learning professional’s toolbox. When we turn our cameras on, we increase the available communication cues; simultaneously, we sometimes increase human discomfort. This qualitative study explores how learning professionals across the spectrum of work contexts (K-12, higher education, corporate, and government) perceive and use webcams for teaching and work-related meetings, focusing on issues related to social presence and transactional distance.
