The case study with twenty preservice teachers explored the use of AI-powered virtual students in virtual reality. Data collected from participatory observations, interviews, computer log files, and recordings. We identified three categorial themes: strategies for ambitious science teaching prompted by AI-powered virtual students, transforming teachers' role in the classroom, and teachers' sensing and reflecting in response to AI-powered virtual students. The study provides insights into the potential of AI-powered virtual students for teaching practices.
