Object-Based Learning in Digital Contexts: Effects of Depicted Physicality and Learner Control

Mon, Oct 16, 2:30 to 3:20pm EDT (2:30 to 3:20pm EDT), Doubletree Main Conference Center - Seminole, Sun & Surf III

Short Description

Digital objects are replacing physical objects in object-based learning contexts, but how digital objects support deeper learning (inference generation) is not well understood. This research explores how presenting digital objects differently, including showing them held and user-control of views, can support deeper processes. An interaction between depicted physicality (visible hands) and learner control was found; self-pacing supported deeper processing when a physicality cue was provided but not when physicality cues were not provided.
