Experiences and Challenges Facing Students in a Self-paced Online Competency-based Course

Tue, Oct 17, 11:00 to 11:50am EDT (11:00 to 11:50am EDT), Doubletree Main Conference Center - Seminole, Space Coast II

Short Description

Self-paced instruction is a modality frequently implemented in online courses. Despite compelling benefits such as flexibility and learner control, research has linked self-paced instruction to academic delay, low engagement, and high dropout rates. Framed by the Rubicon Model of Action Phases, this mixed-methods study examines students’ experiences and challenges in a self-paced competency-based online course. The findings of this investigation may offer online teaching and learning implications for instructors and course designers.
