Webcams and Social Presence in Synchronous Learning: Does Seeing Each Other Make a Difference?

Short Description

In this study, 278 university students were surveyed about their webcam preferences and perceptions of social presence when cameras are on or off. Findings show that perceived social presence is significantly higher when all cameras are on compared to all off, but camera use still does not lead to high perceptions of social presence. Further, significant differences exist among groups of students who prefer cameras on and those with mild or strong preferences for cameras off.
