Efforts to teach programming to novices have been successful through project-based learning and pair programming. We propose Productive Failure-based designs as an effective approach to support novices and youth. Our study, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, involved an online synchronous remote workshop for low-income families. Results indicate the effectiveness of PF design in some computational concepts, but struggles persist with complex concepts. Structured support is needed in PF designs to manage failures and improve problem-solving.
