Using Video Self-Modeling to Enhance the Academic Engagement of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Classroom Settings

Sun, April 15, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

With their prevalence rates overall on the rise, increasing numbers of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are being educated in inclusive settings. However, educators’ lack of experience in teaching students with ASD coupled with the students’ academic, social, and behavioral difficulties can present challenges to their successful inclusion. Thus, there exists a need for research that targets evidence-based practices for this unique, yet growing, population. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of one promising practice, video self-modeling, delivered using video iPods, on the academic engagement of ASD students during instruction.
