Articulating a Common Algebra 1 Final Using Cognitive and Psychometric Models of Student Learning in Mathematics

Abstract

Algebra success rates are dismal in the United States and even more so in California, where only half of students are able to pass this gatekeeper course. This data prompted six superintendents to advocate for a common Algebra Final for all students in their districts. This 3-year study in northern CA included 5,100 Algebra students in 7th through 12th grade across fourteen schools. Fifty teachers and ten administrators were at the center of twenty professional development workshops focused on articulating key mathematical ideas throughout the Algebra curriculum. Using a mixed methods approach, this research incorporates a cognitive theory of learning and a psychometric approach to instrument design to empower educators to create and refine an assessment with multiple item formats.
