Predisposition and Preparation for Postsecondary Education: Student, Teacher, and Parent Perceptions

Abstract

Predisposition and preparation for post-secondary education play key roles in a student’s likelihood of enrolling in, then completing a two-or four-year degree program. A survey was conducted in four public secondary schools in a large urban district to identify student, teacher and parent (or guardian) perceptions regarding predisposition and preparation for enrolling in two- or four-year degree programs. This presentation will discuss implications of these findings for preparing students from urban schools in high poverty areas for post-secondary education. The discussion will include factors related to enrollment in and completion of a two- or four-year degree program by students who are the first ones in their families to graduate from high school.
