I have recorded many of my professional experiences over the last decade, particularly those that were inextricably linked to both my teaching and performing. Through an autobiographical research design embedded in reflective practice, this paper explores the duality of my professional identity as a music teacher and performer, and how this identity affected my pedagogy and student learning in the music classroom. Findings indicate that the duality of teaching and performing had both positive and negative effects on pedagogy and learning in the music classroom. Reexamining my past reflections has allowed me to explore and investigate critical aspects of my own professional identity, which have shed light on my own views, values, ideologies, and representations of the world.
