Abstract

This paper examines the nature and impact of family influence on adolescents’ learning at the secondary school level. The program for international student assessment (PISA) provides a unique opportunity to assess the nature and impact of family influence on students’ learning outcomes in 19 countries/economies in 2009. This enables us for the first time an international comparison on issues of family involvement and investment. Using multi-level analysis, the present study examines the individual and contextual effect of family resources and home based versus school-based involvements on adolescents’ performance, using the data of Hong Kong, an outstanding performing East Asian in PISA.
