The Influence of Family Dynamics on Second-Generation Cambodian Immigrants’ Educational Experience: A Comparative Case Study

Abstract

This research seeks to investigate one of the smaller immigrant groups in America, specifically Cambodian immigrant young adults. Currently, the academic literature examining Southeast Asian Americans deals relatively little to examine the experience or progress of Cambodians in education within the United States. The purpose of this research is to investigate their educational experiences within the conceptual framework of acculturation and to develop approaches in which we can improve their academic outcomes. Of all the issues related to Cambodian immigrant students, this research focuses on issues pertaining specifically to second-generation Cambodian-American students. Eight semi-structured interviews with four second-generation Cambodian-Americans show that parental support, family obligations, and high parental expectations contribute to their progress through college toward their undergraduate degree.
