Abstract

This in-depth interview study with parents of African American children reveals in valuable detail how many African American youth and their families, regardless of social class, experience racism in school that inhibits the pursuit of educational opportunity and success. The study documents examples of institutional racism, racial microaggressions, and more. It also offers critical insight into what educators can and must do to address these problems and suggests important directions for the reform and improvement of teacher education and school policy and practice.
