Explicit Focus on Identity During the Transition to College

Abstract

The first-year college experience is a vibrant environment to study identity development and many college communities have responded to their students' challenges of entering, completing, and succeeding in college through the development of supportive transition programs, many of which focus on underrepresented student populations. The program under investigation in this study is the First-Year Interest Group (FIG), an academically focused transition program at the large Midwestern University in this study. The purpose of this study is to analyze a FIG course which explicitly focuses on identity as a research site to study adolescent identity development in action.
