Social Justice Leadership as Praxis

Abstract

This paper proposes a conceptual framework for social justice leadership as a praxis and explores the implications of this framework for leadership preparation programs. The framework is grounded in a literature review on social justice leadership and organized around three central concepts: Social justice leadership is conceived as a praxis, involving a continual cycle of reflection and action; social justice leadership spans several dimensions, or arenas for this praxis; and each dimension of this praxis requires certain capacities on the part of the social justice leader. The role of preparation programs is, then, to develop these capacities in aspiring school leaders. The paper concludes with implications for preparation programs.
