Research on Five Types of Bullying in Middle Schools

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

Using the latest international educational database, TIMSS, this study investigates eighth-grade students’ five types of bullying in fifteen countries, and a longitudinal study analyzed changes and developments of the bullying in middle schools in 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007. Results find that the orders of the percentage levels of types of bullying are similar; elementary students’ perceptions of the bullying are more serious than those in middle schools; male students experience some types of bullying more than female students; the bullying strongly affects students’ attitudes toward school and their associations but has less impact on students’ academic interests and pressures; and the bullying is positively correlated with students’ addictions but is negatively correlated with their academic achievement.
