Walking the Talk of Indigenist Research in Higher Education: Mobilizing “To Know Is Not Enough”

Abstract

To honour the main tenets of Indigenist theories and methodologies it is important that all aspects of this research process do more than fill the pages of various documents and articles. To facilitate Indigenist research in this study means contributing in tangible ways to self-determining, locally controlled education for First Nations communities. For this reason, I put forward a model of fulfilling the requirements of the UBC PhD Educational Studies program in a manner that contributes to community at all stages of the program and research process. In this paper, I demonstrate how Indigenist research can be mobilized prior to the data collection stages of research by sharing an Indigenist approach to the comprehensive exams portion of my studies.
