“Indians Teaching Indians”: The University of Georgia’s “Indian Teacher Training Project,” 1971-1973

Abstract

The late 1960s and 1970’s was an era in which Native American education profoundly changed. Coinciding with the civil rights movement, there was an interest for Native American “Self-Determination” in their education and many universities felt it was their responsibility to assist in this process. In 1971, ten years after the University of Georgia desegregated, fourteen Native American students attended the institution. Representing ten different tribes, these students traveled to a state that contained no Native American reservations, in order to learn how to teach other Native Americans. This study describes the uniqueness of the proposal and discusses the goals and outcomes of UGA's "Indian Training Project."
