Traversing the Spaces of “Real” Curriculum: Critical Discourse Analysis of Violence, Terrorism, and “Just” War

Abstract

Violence has become a common denominator of our time. Yet the problems of violence remain obscure (Sorel, 1941).What is the nature of violence? How do ordinary Americans respond to the acts of violence, terrorism, and war? How does academia prepare teacher educators to deal with occurrences of violence? The purpose of this study is to outline the critical discourse of violence, terrorism, war, civility, justice, and peace drawing from philosophical, socio-linguistic, and educational works of Arendt (2005, 1998, 1994, 1970a, 1970b), Collingwood (1992), Elshtain (2003, 2002), and from the responses to September 11 terrorism and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by undergraduate and graduate students from Midwestern American universities. The implications are for the currere of possibilities (Pinar, 2004).
