The purpose of this study is to develop conceptually and psychometrically rigorous measures of socioeconomic status (SES) for the National Household Educational Surveys (NHES). The NHES surveys have much to offer educational researchers interesting in studying pre-primary education, child care utilization, school safety and discipline, and adult education and lifelong learning, especially if rigorous measures of SES are available. However, no previous research has attempted to construct measures of SES for these surveys. Doing so should increase the appeal of this database to the educational research community.
