The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of leadership in three schools of education during the redesign of the professional practice doctorate, Ed.D. and how that role was influenced by both internal and external factors. This multi-case study examines three leaders—two from public universities and one from a private university—and their roles and actions in cultivating an organizational atmosphere that was suitable and receptive to an effort aimed at designing a new innovative Ed.D. program. Three specific leadership actions—decision type, garnering support, and agenda development and execution—were identified as key features for the diffusion of redesign efforts and the internal and external factors that influenced their abilities and actions.
