Correlations Between Developmental Kindergarten

Abstract

Correlations were calculated between Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-3) areas of Motor Skills, Conceptual Skills and Language Skills in kindergarten students upon kindergarten entry and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) areas of Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency and Nonsense Word Fluency in the same students one year later (n=89) to determine whether the DIAL-3 is predictive of later DIBELS performance. Moderate correlations exist ranging from a low r=.30 between DIAL-3 Concepts and DIBELS Phoneme Segmentation Fluency to a high r=.55 between DIAL-3 Language and Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (p<0.01). Limitations and implications for practice are discussed.
