Citizen science is an activity in which community members collect data to assist scientists with species population studies over large geographical areas. Previous research has found that joint efforts between students and scientists in informal natural science learning settings positively impacts student self-efficacy and achievement. Collaboration between students and scientists has potential implications for incorporating informal learning studies within traditional academic curricula. The purpose of this mixed method pilot study is to examine the effect of a horseshoe crab citizen science project on student self-efficacy and intrinsic interest. The results of this study illuminate the impact of this type of instruction on children’s self-efficacy beliefs related to science skills and possible career trajectories.
