Research on the Motivation of German and U.S. Teachers to Become School Principals

Abstract

School principals play a pivotal role in establishing the direction for successful schools. Although the German and U.S. educational systems differ in many ways, the challenge of recruiting and retaining highly qualified school leaders is the same in both countries. This presentation will summarize findings from two recent international studies regarding factors that motivate or inhibit U.S. and German teachers to become school leaders. Implications of these findings, possible solutions to the challenge of recruiting school leaders, and ways in which the U.S. and Germany may learn from each other will be discussed.
