Literacy Documentation Project: Using Research to Inform Curriculum and Instruction Decisions at the District Level

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe a research project documenting literacy practices and materials in elementary schools across a mid-sized school district. Project data sources include: a survey of literacy instructional practices, topics and materials; an inventory of materials accessible to teachers; observations and interviews of selected teachers. Data were analyzed, using both descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis, in terms of reading and writing instruction and materials, assessment, planning, and professional development. Study results were utilized by the school district to make literacy curriculum and instruction decisions. This study and the research tools developed to collect data would be of interest to researchers examining literacy practices or collaborating with school districts on literacy curriculum and instruction work.
