Planning With Purpose: Crafting Effective Educative Curriculum Materials for the Social Studies

Abstract

This paper draws from a larger study investigating ECMs and the possible influence they may have had with social studies teachers. We concentrate on a possible next generation of ECMs: how they might be constructed and what they would look like? We use results from our completed study as a basis for proposing principles, providing illustrative models, and providing recommendations to the field on the optimal design and use of future ECMs. Specifically, we will:
1) describe design implications drawn from previous studies employing ECMs,
2) present specific findings and suggestions derived from our design and investigation of a series of social studies ECMs,
3) provide illustrative models and discuss principles directly related to the future design of ECMs
