Abstract

The purpose of this project was to analyze qualitative written perceptions of pre-service teacher experiences with volunteering in a literacy program designed for new immigrant children. Approximately 95 pre-service volunteer journals were read by three researchers to determine thematic content. Four themes were identified and are discussed within the manuscript. Implications for working with ESL immigrant children and training for pre-service teachers who may be unprepared for this type of experience in the public, urban schools are also discussed.
