Model competence is understood as the ability to use models for scientific inquiry. It is a part of scientific literacy and should therefore be fostered in biology lessons. In previous investigations it was shown that pupils and often their teachers do not appreciate the role of models as a research tool.
To foster this competence the theoretical background was structured in a learning pro-gression. On this basis tasks in different formats were developed. They serve as a diag-nostic tool and are used to evaluate the theoretical structure. The verified learning pro-gression will serve as a tool to foster teachers’ competence development and will sup-port them in the diagnosis of their pupils’ competences as well as in the learning process.
