Culture and Language Learning: Research on the Literacy Practices of Children of Immigrants

Abstract

Although students' literacy practices are influenced by a variety of sources, including texts, teachers, peers, the media, and their home culture (Dyson, 1992), the process of becoming literate is truly grounded in their cultural beliefs (Ferdman, 1990). Literacy skills are embedded in cultural practice, which is learned implicitly through participation within the cultural community (Purcell-Gates, 1995). The purpose of my dissertation is to explore the literate worlds of immigrant families to determine what types of literacy practices are developed through cultural ideologies.
