Paper Summary

A Qualitative Study of First-Year College Transition Experiences Among First-Generation, Ethnic Minority Immigrant Students

Sun, April 15, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 224

Abstract

The first-year college experience is critical because during this time students negotiate the transition from adolescence to young adulthood that shapes success in college and leads to a degree completion and career prospects. By taking an ecological perspective, this qualitative study examines interactions between individual characteristics and the immediate environment to better understand first-generation, ethnic minority immigrant students’ first-year college transition experiences and to illuminate the individual and contextual factors that influence them.
