Talking The Walk: Students’ Talk About Learning and School’s Pedagogy

Abstract

This paper explores the pedagogy of a learning setting from the standpoint of the students. It shows how students' talk about learning enriches our knowledge of the actual pedagogy that takes place within a particular learning environment. We term this particular aspect of (actual) pedagogy "pedagogy in practice" (PiP), referring to the interaction between students' learning experiences and school's pedagogy. It discloses the very pedagogy that eventually interacts with the students' being and thus endows us with tools to improve education.
We show this by qualitatively analyzing students' "talk" about their learning experiences in open group conversations, comparing two holistically different learning environments – a conventional high school and an alternative arts and sciences high school.
