Career Satisfaction and Success of Physical Scientists in Project Crossover

Abstract

The National Academy of Sciences (National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine) have emphasized a focus on achieving success in advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education due to the narrowing of the STEM workforce and its limited representation of racial minorities and females, or underrepresented minorities (URM; National Academy of Sciences, 2007). However without a better understanding of measures of career satisfaction and success of physical scientists and later persistence within these careers, the STEM pathway cannot grow and will continue to narrow. This proposal examines the model and constructs of career satisfaction and success through a series of survey questions from Project Crossover designed for physics and chemistry science PhDs.
