A Psychometric Evaluation of the Inventory of the Polychronic Values in a Paired Sample of Mothers and Adolescents

Abstract

Polychronicity, better known as multitasking, means engaging in two or more tasks simultaneously.The Inventory of Polychronic Values (IPV) is used to assess people’s preference for polychronicity and its impact on learning and performance. The IPV is purported to yield a single factor structure. However, data obtained from paired mother and adolescent responses to the IPV indicated that a single factor structure yielded poor reliability estimates. A reduced set of the IPV yielded a two factor structure that appeared to be invariant across pairs of mothers and adolescents. Mothers’ multitasking beliefs for others explained a moderate amount of variance in their adolescent’s multitasking beliefs for others. However, mothers’ self-multitasking preferences explained little variance in their adolescent’s self-multitasking preferences.
