Effects of Technology-Supported and Hands-On Units on the Mathematics Performance of Low-Achieving Middle School Students

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to report findings from an Institute of Education Sciences (Cognition and Student Learning) Goal 3 study that tested the efficacy of Enhanced Anchored Instruction (EAI) for improving the computation and problem solving skills of students with learning disabilities in math (MLD). A total of 31 middle schools participated in the pretest-posttest cluster-randomized school-based trial. Curriculum aligned and standardized tests were used to assess the achievement of students in the EAI schools compared to that of students in the Business-As-Usual (BAU) instructional condition. Results showed that the fractions computation and problem solving performance of students in the EAI schools improved over that of students in the BAU schools.
