Learning in Places: Profiles of Community-Based New Media Arts Practices

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Beluga

Abstract

This presentation presents understandings on how community-based new media arts education programs offer an alternative pedagogical space to engage youth through digital media production opportunities. It also explores how community-based arts educators conceptualize, design and implement learning and teaching within their specific programming structures. Our discussion addresses the role of community-based programs in developing sociocultural identities among youth and the learning process of youth participating in personal growth and community building. Our analysis proposes implications for art teachers and art educators, which explore the inter-relationships among media production, social engagement, identity, and empowerment. As new media practice becomes increasingly social, our research presents curricular and pedagogical approaches that are applicable to out of school and offer implications for in-school programs.
